Welcome back to the TSL QB Power Rankings!

We always talk about how stats aren’t meaningful until later in the season, and it’s SO TRUE.  Some teams have easy schedules, some teams have one blowout win that inflates their numbers.  There’s always some kind of asterisk with each team.  “Yeah, they look pretty good BUT…”

We have SEVEN OUT OF EIGHT weeks in the books now though, and the asterisks are done.  We KNOW how good you are, and the excuses don’t hold water anymore.

That said – here are the best QBs in the League:

The first thing you’ll notice is that Darryl isn’t on the list.  Shocking, right?

The top four don’t change this week, because nothing happened to MAKE them change.  Bobby went undefeated.  Joey beat Mike.  Ryan beat Frodo.  Yawn.

Buddy Lee put up some MAJOR points with PWI this week, and while he lost to Eyes Downtown with Freeballers, he was able to settle for a tie with Sticky Bandits.  2-1-1 was a good enough day for him to move up in the Rankings.

The Malones got killed by Legends and Eyes Downtown this week.  The result wasn’t surprising given the strength of schedule, but when was the last time the Malones were held to 24 points in ONE game, let alone across a doubleheader?

GHDC defeated Cunning Stunts again and finished with a perfect record in D3.  They are now GUARANTEED both a first round playoff bye AND a semifinal matchup against a team with a losing record.  If only I’d Rather Be Golfing were taking notes…

BQI had their lowest offensive output since Game One of the season, as many of their players had conflicts with Eyes Downtown.  Would we penalize Bridget in the Rankings for not winning without her stars?  Of course.  Lucky for her, the QBs directly beneath her ALSO lost this week, so she holds on to the #9 spot.

What’s going on with Bullet Club?  They were undefeated and in first place, and have since dropped three in a row.  Victorious Secret won by forfeit, which meant that somehow with 8 teams in D5, we did not have a SINGLE D5 game played on Saturday.

Let’s Get Reccked started 0-3 and, admittedly, we all wrote them off as a disaster.  Since then they are 4-0 and looking like a legitimate contender for playoffs.  Seth is knocking on the door of Top Ten QB status right now.

D-Generation XY and Z are a good team, but still a hair below most other D2 teams it seems.  Their point differential says they’re about as good as Bullet Club, and maybe they are (they’ve certainly had enough playoff success that we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt).  The only D2 team that REALLY seems to be struggling…

… is the System.  Their defense is about average, but that offense is averaging less than 20 PPG.  You’re not going to win many games like that.

Practice Squad and Greater Value Tater Thots combined for 103 points (and two wins) on Saturday.  We all know the story on B’s teams – late bloomers that peak for playoffs.  Thots could D4.  Practice Squad COULD win D3… if Grey Hair Don’t Care didn’t exist.

Flying Balls are now in the hunt for the D4 1-seed.  Coochie Monsters actually control their own destiny (they’ll take the 1-seed with two wins on Saturday) but Flying Balls will likely finish 6-1-1 this season for the 2-seed if they handle business against a suddenly collapsing NSS (whose QB Rick Recckio has reportedly gone AWOL).

PowerPuff Girls are just in fifth place in the D4 standings after dismantling Blue Ballers, but they’re still #1 in points per game.  Offense isn’t the issue here!  If the Girls (we can say that, it’s part of their team name!) can get some stops, this will be the team no one wants to play in the Playoffs).

Poor Buffalo Vice!  They’re 2-5 this session… and their two wins came against Cobblestone forfeits.  Much of the fun of playing football is leaving the field victorious, and they’ve been denied that so far this season.  Could they win a playoff game?  Of course.  But we don’t see them winning three.

And now, in defense of our quarterbacks everywhere, let’s take a look at the defenses of the TSL.  Who’s making their QB look good?  Who’s making their QB look bad???  Let’s find out.

What stands out?

We always say that the GREAT defenses hold teams to under 20 points per game, and the HORRIBLE defenses allow more than 40 (almost every other team falls in between).

The GREAT defenses this session are Coochie Monsters, TMA, Raw Milkers and Irish Giants.

The HORRIBLE defenses this session are Freeballers, Can’t Touch This, The Malones, Frodo Swaggins and Buffalo Vice.  Four of those teams, you’ll notice, are in D1.  That makes sense – it’s hard to face people like Joey Batts, Bobby McConnell, Mike Thomas and Ryan Dougherty every week.

Another way to look at it instead of comparing versus arbitrary 20 ppg/40 ppg targets, is which defenses are best and worst against the rest of their own division.  For example, D1 defenses are all allowing 33 PPG or higher… except for Eyes Downtown, who are under 23 PPG!  They almost made the 20 PPG Club DESPITE their strength of schedule.  Grey Hair Don’t Care similarly is allowing 22.6 PPG in a division where everyone else is allowing 32+, and TMA is allowing just 14.7 PPG in a division where everyone else is 22+.  No wonder these teams are all doing well!
